Ramos blasts USPS for canceling meeting to discuss mail delays

Councilwoman said her constituents had wanted a chance to ask postal officials about extreme delays in mail delivery that predate the pandemic

An exasperated Councilwoman Odette Ramos called out U.S. Postal Service officials today for what she said was a disrespectful 11th-hour cancellation of a virtual community meeting that had been scheduled for tonight to discuss lengthy mail service delays and other problems.

“My constituents have been receiving poor mail service before, during the pandemic and now. This was a chance for the USPS to show up and listen to the people they serve,” Ramos, who represents the 14th District, said in a statement released this afternoon.

“After months of planning, they decided to cancel at the last minute and not give any options to reschedule,” Ramos said. “Many people rely on the postal service for important items such as medications and checks. This is unacceptable.”

The meeting, which was supposed to serve as an opportunity for residents to share concerns about late mail delivery, was coordinated through Ramos with the assistance of U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen.

Ramos decided to call a meeting anyway to denounce postal officials and Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, for “the terrible service from USPS, the lack of accountability and for refusing to meet with residents.”

Ramos says she has sent options to reschedule the meeting to USPS, but has not received a response so far.
